South of Oban is a completely different world from the north
side with easy to get to islands, ancient villages and the
unique attractions of Kilmartin Glen. This area deserves at
least a day of your holiday and preferably allow two days to
take it all a a leisurely enjoyable pace.

In the heart of Melfort Holiday Village 30 mins south of Oban at
Kilmelford. This peaceful and relaxing oasis offers great food
all made on the premises by the chef/proprietor. Open daily

Isle
of Luing. An island within easy reach of the main land, full
of history, wild life, and yet relatively unknown. See the world
famous Luing Cattle. The island is 6 miles by 2 miles long ideal
for those wanting to explore the island by bike or on foot.
Catch the ferry which runs every half hour, approx £1.45 per
adult return
for foot passengers. Walk less than a 100 yards and you will see
the cycle hire run by Mike and
Rosy Barlow. Full size bikes,
tandem, tag along half bikes and child trailers. Tel. 01852

included with the hire. You will also find them a source of

The Slate Islands Heritage Trust
was set up by a charitable
trust to preserve the heritage and environment of the Slate
Islands. Slates quarried here were once shipped all over the
world. Displays include excellent models, details of quarry
workings over the last 3 centuries, genealogical & social
history and geological information. Open 7 days, Mar to Sept:

Easdale
Island Folk Museum. Set up in 1980 by the then owner of the
island, Chris Nicholson. The Curator, Jean Adams MBE is a direct
descendent of one of the quarry workers, Duncan McGreggor. With
the help of local residents and the families of past quarry
workers, Jean collected, collated & arranged displays of
photographs and artifacts that have originated in the locality.
Open April - Oct, 7 days. 10.30am- 5.30pm. 17 mls south of Oban.
Discover the quiet charm of
Arduaine Garden! Stroll among the
spectacular rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias, wander the
leafy trails of the woodland garden to the viewpoint overlooking
the Sound of Jura and explore the lower garden where blue
Tibetan poppies, giant Himalayan lilies and Chatham Island
forget-me-nots thrive. Open all
year, daily 9.30am to sunset. A816, 20 miles S of Oban.
The Atlantic Bridge. Built in 1792 after the disadvantages of
ferrying large bodies of troops were highlighted in the 1745
Jacobite rebellion. A high single span bridge over a navigable
channel between Seil Island and the mainland permitting sailing
boats to pass under its span. For centuries being acclaimed as
the only bridge across the Atlantic. South of Oban on the A816
and then 5 miles on the B844.
Kilmartin Glen is one of the most important places for ancient
monuments in Europe. The sheer concentration of sites within a
small area can not be equaled. Neolithic and Bronze Age
chambered cairns, stone circles and rock carvings, Iron Age
forts, early Christian sculptured stones, medieval castles and
one of the last wild raised bogs left in Britain. A great way to
