Tobermory, the main town on
the Island of
Mull

Tobermory, from ‘Tobar Mhoire’ (Well of Mary). There has
been a small settlement here from the earliest times. The modern
Tobermory was established in 1789 by the British Society for
Encouraging Fisheries. Despite its fine bay, fishing has never
prospered here.
Modern Tobermory, is the largest town on Mull. The harbour
front is distinctive for its brightly coloured buildings, giving
a unique and recognisable image often photographed. The wide
selection of privately owned businesses offers variety not found
in the large chains of the mainland. With the filming of the
popular BBC’s children’s TV series, Balamory here has drawn
children from all over Britain to pay a visit.
Daily
and Custom Walking Tours of Mull will take you to fabulous
scenery, seascapes, wild life, flora and deserted villages while
connecting with the folklore and history of Mull. The essence of
Mull Magic is to engage with the countryside, rather than
strenuous mountain climbing. You can be met off Oban Ferry at
Craignure and returned for the 5pm ferry back. Lunch and
transport included. £30pp. Tel:01688 301245

covering topics from the creation of the Isle of Mull, castles
on Mull, the travels of Johnson and Boswell, Armada relics and
parts from a wartime plane crash. Totally run by a volunteer
workforce, dependent on the £1 entry fee for survival. Well
worth a visit. Open Easter to mid Oct, 10am to 4pm, Mon
to Fri. Main Street, Tobermory.

North Tobermory Cliff Walk. Along this walk, a short
distance from the CalMac ferry terminal, there is an old gun
placement with the wooden gun carriage. After about 15 min (at a
brisk pace), one comes out of the trees to an excellent view of
the sea and all that is in it: porpoises, dolphins, whales (if
you are lucky), boats and ships. N.B. This walk is about 100 ft
above sea level with steep drops to the sea.
You will find much to do and see in Tobermory,
whether you are there for a few hours or all day. We highly
recommend you try out the places listed above, they are in our
opinion excellent and are a must when visiting Tobermory.
