The Heritage Centre houses a collection of photographs,
artefacts and genealogical records related to the social and
industrial life of the Slate Islands of Argyll, especially the
people engaged in the former slate industry. These records cover
the period 18-20th century. Individual visitors, parties and school
groups are welcome to visit the Centre
In 1999, a group of individuals came together to form the Scottish
Slate Islands Heritage Trust. Seeking charitable status, their
objective is to advance the education of the public on matters
regarding the life and times of the people within the
islands.
This is achieved by collecting and publishing information
regarding the area. It researches and records former industrial
practice, architectural and sociological aspects of the former
slate industry and life in the islands.
The Trust also collects documents, records, artifacts and other
historical items, to preserve and protect them and make them
available to the public.
In addition to the past history the Trust keeps a continuous
record of events and happenings of today, for researchers of the
future. The Trust is always pleased to hear from anyone who may
have information, records and other matter which would be of
interest
