The Isle of Iona with its current population of 90 was the
birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. Here St. Columba arrived in
his coracle in 563AD to bring Christianity to Britain. The island
is separated from Mull by the mile wide stretch of water, the Sound
of Iona.
To get to Iona you must first take a ferry to the Isle of
Mull. Once on Mull you need to travel by car or coach to
Fionnphort on the south-west tip of the Ross of Mull. From here
Caledonian MacBrayne ferry runs frequently over to Iona. The
journey takes approximately 5 minutes and is for foot-passengers
and bicycles, only residents of the island can take their vehicles
onto the island
